Obituary

Obituary for Caroline R. Pohle

Caroline R. Pohle, 95, native and long-time resident of New Rochelle, NY passed away peacefully August 15, 2020 at Calvary Hospital with loving family nearby. Her husband of 67 years, Gunther, died in February. They are now dancing the Lindy together in Heaven. Caroline and Gunther raised their family in New Rochelle where Caroline was born July 23, 1925, to Sullivan (Salvatore) Renis, an Italian grocer, and Alice (née Kautz), a native of Callicoon Center, NY, in the Catskills. Caroline spent her childhood often visiting Callicoon with her brother Charles (Charlie) who died in 1993. She graduated Albert Leonard High School in 1943 and began her 17-year career as a typist at the Equitable Life Insurance company in midtown Manhattan.

Caroline loved the hustle and bustle of NYC, but New Rochelle was always home. Her leisure time was spent at Hudson Park, or with lifelong friends Rita and Ann McCarthy. She married her favorite dance partner Gunther at St. Gabriel’s Church on April 26, 1952 and began raising their family on Fern Street in New Rochelle in 1960. Their first child was Diane, now Borgia (Jim) of N. White Plains, NY. Then came Nancy, now Montagnino (Jim) of Saratoga Springs, NY followed by David (Gerry) of Athens, NY. Under Caroline’s watchful eyes, the house on Fern St was a mecca for the neighborhood children who enjoyed romping in the backyard, swinging, climbing and building forts. All types of play were encouraged.

Once the children were all safely settled into school, Caroline resumed her career as a Clerk Typist for the New Rochelle Board of Education across the school system and later in Pupil Services in City Hall. Caroline always loved to travel. When her children were young, she spent time with them taking road trips in the station wagon. After retiring in 1991, she and Gunther expanded their horizons and enjoyed wonderful travels. Their later years were spent at their beloved home watching the neighborhood from the front porch.

They are loved and missed by three loving grandsons, James Borgia (Kelly), Dan Borgia, Max Montagnino, and granddaughter Alex Queenan (Dave), and great grandchildren Emily and Patrick Borgia.
