Obituary

Obituary for Catherine N. Pappas

Catherine Nicol Pappas nee Leonard passed away January 17, 2020 at the age of 85 in West Islip, NY. Born on May 17, 1934 in Bronx, NY to two Scottish immigrants, Patrick J Leonard and Isabella S Leonard nee McKenna. Catherine was one of three sisters, Patty Leonard and Anne Scott.

Catherine worked for the NY Telephone company in downtown New York City, was a homemaker for 20 years, went on to get her High School degree and then a Nurse’s Aide Certification. She worked for Consolation Residence as a Nurse’s Aide in West Islip for 23 years. Although she was born and raised in the Bronx, she spent most of her life as a Long Island South Shore resident in Bay Shore, Islip and Babylon.

She was a mother of four children, Christopher, Andrew, Lisa and Philip. She was the Grandmother of ten, Jake, Alison, Hannah, Drew, Courtney, Tatum, Christiane, Katie, Stephen and Jackie. Mother-In-Law to Lisa, Kathy and Patti. Catherine was also a devoted Aunt to ten nieces and nephews, Christopher, John, Louis, Laurie, Billy, Annemarie, Chrisanne, Kenneth, Liz, Jaqueline, George, Peter and Doreen. Sister-In Law to Nick, Willy, John, Irma and Pete.

Catherine’s most precious pastime was her family; she loved a good holiday by hosting large groups of family members. If there wasn’t a holiday to celebrate she would have a summer BBQ to bring family, friends and loved ones together. She was a great cook and entertainer.

Three words that sum up her life; Family-Friends-Loved Ones.

I have known Catherine all my life, from the time we were toddlers and so we grew up in tandem. I have hundreds of memories stored in my minds eye, somehow like a mental oasis when I have need of it. The childhood games in the woods across from our apartment building, our victory gardens during World War II, girl scouts, getting our badges and summer camp. My family knew her parents and they were kind & compassionate neighbors & friends. Catherine encapsulated these traits. I'm sure they are instilled in her own children as well. Although the last years of our lives were in the distance of miles, we were always in touch & would keep our life journeys up to date. We liked to reminisce of our teen years. They were happy & carefree times with our first boy crushes, church dances, football games, parties, frolicking in Ewen Park and every Saturday at the movies with the whole crew of boys & girls we knew. Del Pra's or Luhr's ice cream parlor after the movies with the jute box playing the great songs of the 50's. In 1955 we both married within 2 months of each other. Later the joy of our subsequent children's births. All I can say is, she left us with the fondest of memories. How does one say thank you, for a gift of someones lifetime...Love you, rest in peace dear friend.
