Obituary

Obituary for Daniel John Portanova

Daniel John Portanova, a W. Harrison resident, died November 16, 2019 at the age of 83.
Dan was born on May 26, 1936 in Purchase, NY to Mary and Daniel Portanova. He spent his early years on New Street surrounded by the Portanova clan. He and his mom moved to Lakeview Avenue in Silver Lake at the age of 12 after his father became ill. Dan would live in Silver Lake for the rest of his life. There, he lived with his mom, Aunt Emily and Uncle Danny Gizzo, Aunt Angie and Uncle Mike Casarella, and Grandma Casarella, in the big house “up the hill”. Lakeview Avenue was also home to Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Freddie Tancredi and Aunt Ida and Uncle Tony Cipriano. Aunt Doris and Uncle Frank Casarella lived nearby, as did Aunt Lucy and Uncle Eddie Cianflone. There was also Aunt Connie and Uncle Johnnie in Purchase and Aunt Betty and Uncle Tony in Harrison, and many, many, many cousins. Together with the Purchase Portanovas, it was a big loving family that provided support to Mary and her young son, Dan.
Dan graduated from White Plains High School and headed for the Marines. After his discharge he became a White Plains Fireman. In January 1958 on a blind date, he met Judi Brassington, a girl from the Bronx. It was love at first sight! They were married on November 29 that year and would be happily married for almost 61 years, raising two sons, Mark and Danny. Dan left the Fire Department to buy a bar with Judi’s brother Eddie. Neither had bartending experience so it was quite a wild ride! “The Mayfair Room”, located on 47th Street in Times Square attracted many interesting patrons that would become recurring characters in Dan’s trademark storytelling.
Dan and Eddie remained partners, buying a small tavern close to home called “The Bullpen” across from Silver Lake Park. A few years later they sold it to buy a restaurant with Uncle Freddie that would become “Casarella’s”, a well-known institution in all of Westchester. Many Casarella and Portanova family members worked at the restaurant. Casarella’s made everyone feel welcome. The home cooked meals Freddie and Gracie made and comforting atmosphere were enjoyed by many for twenty years. Dan retired from the restaurant business in 1994 spending many happy winters in Florida with Judi. He would come full circle by returning to Purchase to become the Manager at The Blind Brook Club. He matched up members for rounds, ran the golf shop and became a confidante to many.
Dan spent his entire life serving others and will be missed by all who knew him, especially his wife Judi; their son Dan and his wife Patty and their children Matthew, Andrea and Michael; their son Mark and his wife Sue and their children Kristen, Tyler and Stephanie.

Wow. So sorry to hear this and very sorry for the family, as you have lost a great man. Danny and Eddie were so kind to my father “Kenny Budd” and myself also. Whenever I visited my father at the bar Danny always greeted me with a warm smile and a ginger ale. One christmas I was going to meet my father at Casarellas And I couldn’t get a ride to the bar. I eventually got there after closing time and all the chairs were lined up on the bar, lights out, and at the end of the bar was my father and Danny. Danny waited until I got there to see my father and wish him a merry christmas. What a kind loving caring soul he was. God bless Danny and thank you for always taking care of Kenny Budd❤️❤️
