Elena Judith Paladino Anson of Scarsdale, NY, passed away peacefully on May 14. She was born in 1941 in New York City to Margaret and Ralph Paladino. Judy received her B.A. in English Literature from Good Counsel College in White Plains, where she was truly a leader and a force in college: In her senior year, Judy was elected to serve as president of the student council by the entire student body. Judy went on to receive her M.A. in Literature from the University of Bridgeport.
Judy enthusiastically spent more than 30 years as a middle-school teacher at local Roman Catholic schools, including several years at Our Lady of Fatima in Scarsdale and more than 25 years at Holy Family School in New Rochelle. Throughout her career, Judy enjoyed connecting with her students over her English literature and religious education classes, while also imparting her wit and sense of humor. She was dedicated to preparing her eighth-grade students for high-school and encouraging them to always be good, lifelong members of their Catholic faith and of the world at large.
Judy extended those lessons to her two beloved daughters, demonstrating to them the importance of compassion, kindness, and perseverance. After retiring from teaching, Judy enjoyed walks with her friends, crossword puzzles, and celebrating her grandchildren’s achievements. She also took pride in her lifelong membership with the Girl Scouts of the USA. She leaves behind a loving and devoted family, including daughters Amy M. Anson of Hartsdale, NY, and Stacia Anson Harrje, of McLean, VA; son-in-law Evan Harrje, of McLean, VA; grandchildren Kristen Harrje and Nicholas Harrje of McLean, VA; and many close family members and friends who can readily recount memories of Judy’s wit, wry cynicism, intellect, storytelling, and generosity. She is predeceased by her loving brother, Daniel R. Paladino.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Shrine of St. Jude Claretian Missionaries ( or to the “Daniel R. Paladino Research Fund and Office of External Development” via Weill Cornell Medical College (Rochelle Cohen, Office of External Affairs, Weill Cornell Medical College, 1300 York Avenue, Box 314, New York, NY, 10065). Judy’s family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

Forever one of my favorite teachers. I remember mailing her a copy of my high school recommended reading list and asking what books she herself recommended. A week later a package arrived with the books she liked! So generous. One of them was To Kill a Mockingbird, and it remains one of my favorite books today. I’m so sorry for your loss. She touched so many lives!!!

Mrs. Anson was, far and away, the most memorable, and my most fondly remembered teacher in grammar school. As a student that frequently got into hot water for butting heads with other, less gifted teachers, I always loved Mrs. Anson best. She was hilarious, challenging, and responsive to how some “bad” kids were merely bored by her less-than-engaging peers. My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this most exceptional educator.
