Obituary

Obituary for Elizabeth Ann Hanney

Elizabeth (Betty) Ann Hanney (née Chema) passed away on December 21, 2019. She was 81 years old. Betty was a resident of Fort Myers, Florida for twenty-eight years and prior to that, Yorktown Heights, New York for 30 years. She was born and raised in Yonkers, New York.

Betty was born to John and Margaret (Hynes) Chema. She had two brothers, Peter and Michael. She attended Yonkers Catholic schools and after high school, worked at General Electric Credit in New York City. In 1959, she married John (Jack) Hanney at Holy Rosary Church in Yonkers. In 1963, Betty and Jack moved to Yorktown Heights where they raised their four children in what they thought was the ideal place to raise a family, with wonderful neighbors and friends. In Yorktown, they were members of Saint Elizabeth Seton Church.

After raising their children, Betty and Jack retired to Florida. Both Betty and Jack loved their new lives in Florida. As Jack often joked with Betty: “You’ve come a long way from Woodworth Avenue (Yonkers)!”

Betty quickly adapted to Florida life. She took up the game of golf, Jack’s favorite pastime, and was a member of the Ladies Nine Hole Golf League. She was very proud of the Birdie pin she earned! Betty was a member of the Garden Club and helped with their toy drives and fashion shows. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society where she gladly donned her purple dress and red hat. Betty was a talented knitter and sewer and a great cook. She enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds and was an ardent walker. In Florida, she and Jack were parishioners of Saint Columbkille Catholic Church.

Betty is survived by her four children: Mary Lou Hanney (John Adams) of Ridgefield, Connecticut, Kevin Hanney of Ponte Vedra, Florida, Colleen Cunney of White Plains, New York and Michael Hanney (Marilyn) of San Clemente, California, and twelve grandchildren.

Betty was predeceased by Jack, her beloved husband of 46 years, and her cherished grandson, Ryan Adams, who was the innocent passenger in a tragic plane crash at the age of 18.

Betty was a quiet, humble person. No one ever had a bad word to say about her. She was sweet, friendly, thoughtful and caring. We should all strive to be more like her. She was loved by so many and is already greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and many other family and friends.

Three things in life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.

That is how Betty lived her entire life.
