Obituary

Obituary for Eloise Jones Dunbar

Eloise J. Dunbar
Scarsdale- Eloise Jones Dunbar, a former longtime resident of White Plains, passed away at home on December 4, 2019. A centenarian, born in Augusta, Georgia on September 8, 1919, she was the daughter of the late James C. and Queen E. (Wright) Jones. The youngest of eight, Eloise grew up and went to school in Augusta. Like family members before her, she attended Paine College. On April 24, 1938, she married her childhood sweetheart Thomas Dunbar. A union that produced two daughters, and lovingly lasted for nearly 63 years.
A gentle, intelligent woman, with a warm smile that often belied a disarming wry sense of humor, Eloise was an unpretentiously self-confident, highly principled, and truly caring individual. With a word on which one could depend, she was strong of opinion and purpose. Coupled with loving leadership, her primary focus was always the support of family and the enrichment of their well-being. Maintaining a happy and secure home was essential, the education of her children a propriety.

Mrs. Dunbar, was predeceased by her husband Thomas Dunbar, daughter Dorothy L Dunbar, EdD, and her siblings. She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline L. Dunbar, MD (Scarsdale NY), a small circle of close friends and numerous nieces and nephews.

As per Eloise’s request, service will be private, with memorialization at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale NY. A celebration of life is being planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Dunbar Family Fund, administered by the Westchester Community Foundation, 210 North Central Ave. Hartsdale NY 10530. The fund aims to encourage and support the education of minority women and girls in pursuit of careers in science, education or the arts.
