Obituary

Obituary for Maryella O'Brien

Maryella O'Brien, a longtime resident of Brewster, NY, passed away at the age of 76 on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 in the Bronx, NY after a long but strong battle with dementia. Maryella, known to most as Nana, was born January 30, 1943 in the Bronx, NY, daughter of the late Harry and Marie (Benadetto) Still. Maryella attended Walton High School in the Bronx. After graduation, Maryella attended Hunter College with aspirations of becoming a teacher. After a few semesters and a lot of hard work, Maryella decided that college was not for her and she pursued employment at the telephone company that was located on what was once her maternal Nana's farm. Maryella married Kenneth M. O'Brien on August 12, 1967 and devoted herself to raising her children, and thereafter being active in the lives of her grandchildren. The O’Brien Family moved to Brewster, NY in February of 1978. A little over a year ago, Nana moved to the Bronx, where she was lovingly cared for by Harry and his partner, Wagner, as dementia took hold. Most recently, they were assisted by Keryann, a personal care assistant, who showered her with kindness, for which her family is so grateful. Nana dedicated her life to
her children and grandchildren. Anyone who knew her, knows she was always bursting with pride over the accomplishments of her children, and now her grandchildren, as they have all made their way in the world. There is a whole community from Brewster that has fond memories of rides in the O’Brien Family Van and Turkey Frank barbeques, and another generation who knows her as Nana, because she stood on the sidelines cheering on her grandkids for the last 2 decades. Nana’s commitment to her family was always unwavering.
She is survived by her son Sean O'Brien and daughter-in law Jennifer of Pensacola, FL, her daughter Kelli O'Brien and son-in law Bob Waltenberg of Westtown, NY, her son Scott O'Brien and daughter in law Lizabeth of South Windsor, CT, her daughter Kerri O'Brien and son-in-law Mike Yatsko of Tampa, FL, her son Harry O'Brien and her son-in-law Wagner of Bronx, NY, and her 3rd “daughter” Pamela Clemente of Kent, NY. Maryella has eleven grandchildren; Connor, Dylan, Abner, Colin, Kyle, Sydney, Dannon, William, James, Katherine, and Margaret )who are her pride and joy. And, of course, her beloved puppies, Hershel and Kramer.
Friends may call at the McMahon, Lyon & Harnett Funeral Home, 491 Mamaroneck Avenue,
White Plains, NY on Tuesday January 28, 2020 from 10am to 1 pm. A burial at Ferncliff Cemetery will follow.
